Existentialism

We have been studying Jean-Paul Satre and the concept of Existentialism.
"Through consciousness, a human being creates his own values and determines a meaning to life"

Here are a few examples of the childrens thoughts on the meaning of life . . .

Llambeth Palace

Mrs Whaley, our Principal, enjoyed an evening at Lambeth Palace with the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Revd. Dr. Rowan Williams, who is a fan of our school and came and took an Assembly for us when he lived in Newport.

Shared Reading

Shared reading has become a regular lesson on the school timetable due to it's popularity with the children. The older pupils are paired with the younger pupils and they share a book of their choice. This promotes confidence in the younger child, as well as increasing the fluency of the older reader.

Harvest Festival

Llangattock School and Monmouth Montessori Nursery attended the annual Harvest service at St Cadocs Church, Llangattock-Vibon-Avel on Friday.  We are grateful to the parish who join us in our service which includes autumn songs, prayers written by the children and offering Harvest gifts. The gifts are then sold to parents and staff. This year money raised will be donated to The Christian Lewis Trust.  The children enjoy the walk to church and the opportunity for their families to see them taking part in the service.

School Council 2009 – 2010

Once again competition was strong for places on the school council. Lower and Middle school members were voted in by their classmates while the top office places held by Upper school were battled out on the merits of speeches delivered by the candidates. There was some lively debate and we certainly may have some future politicians at Llangattock School.

Transition Monmouth Orchard Project

This week we were fortunate to receive an invitation from Vivien Mitchell of the steering group, to bring some children along to help with ground preparation prior to planting. Eight of the oldest children donned gloves and wellies and got down to some serious weeding. During a welcome break, we enjoyed drinks and snacks with the volunteers on a beautiful, sunny, autumn day which showed off the chosen location at its best. Once planted, it will bring a new lease of life to a previously overgrown field.

Transition Monmouth is a voluntary group whose aim is to tackle eco issues like climate change and peak oil with a view to providing a sustainable future for Monmouth and the surrounding area.

In April 2009 Transition Monmouth Food Group decided to make a community orchard a priority. Permission was granted by Monmouth County Council to use part of the Millennium Field for their first orchard. Initial meetings with experts helped the group draw up plans for planting appropriate to the area and the hard work really started in September 2009.

We hope to be able to attend the planting of the orchard during November and follow the progress of the project thereafter.
